What is a Doula?
A doula is a trained companion who supports the expectant parent(s) through every stage of bringing a child into the world from the time of conception until the 4th trimester(postpartum). A Doula is well versed in the physiology of birth, the emotional needs of the expectant parent(s) before, during and after labor. A Doula encourages the expectant parent(s) to explore/research their birth options, help to develop a birth plan and establish goals to help them achieve their wishes to have the best birthing experience. A doula does not replace the partner/spouse/support person, unless they are unavailable. A Doula answers questions, gives suggestions and provides supportive care in addition to what the partner/spouse/support person provides. A Doula is there to make the birthing experience for the expectant parent(s), a very positive, inspiring experience.
